Poem: “I, too, sing America” After Langston Hughes’ poem, “I, Too”
I wrote this poem in 2017 and received an Honorable Mention at the Scholastic Art and Writing Award.
“I, too, sing America.” Our brown bodies dance to the blue tune as our shadows get foggy, we still dance under the moon. The cool starless night shone the silhouettes of our beating bodies. What a beautiful sight! The only ones dancing. Our wild natural hair, full of kinks, curls and waves, make us aware that we must not behave. White folk mad at us, because we are the “New Negro.” Our articulate and self assured brown bodies make us grow. Hence, we also embody, “I, too, sing America.”
